Rodeo for a Reason
Kendra Dickson and Rodeo For a Reason

Makailey Brock

In February 2011 my husband and I were searching for a step up barrel horse for our daughter Makailey (6 at the time). We set up an appointment to go see Kendra Dickson in Aubrey TX. We didn’t know that this path would change our lives forever.

On that day we were introduced to Rodeo For A Reason. Kendra and Makailey talked about horses, she even rode a few. During the course of riding Makailey realized Kendra had more to share then just tips about horses.

We as a family realized she wasn’t afraid to talk openly about Jesus as well. As a Christian family we went to church, but not extremely open about our Faith. From that point Makailey as well as the rest of the family, realized that God should not be hide, He should be allowed to shine in every aspect of your life. Weather that be in the baseball dugout, volleyball court or the rodeo arena.

We had the pleasure of joining a few Rodeo For A Reason clinics that helped Makailey with her horsemanship, as well as her spiritual growth. Makailey learned some ways to make her runs faster, as well as setting personal goals. She also realized that it’s not about winning, it’s about what you have learned, and able to teach others.

Rodeo is a gamble, you might win, and you might eat dirt. But one thing is for sure, God will be there with you every step of the way.

We would not have thought that buying a simple step up horse from some random lady would have impacted our lives so much. God has a path for each of us. We don’t know when or why, but he has a reason for us meeting those that we do. Through Rodeo For A Reason, both my kids have become the outstanding Christians that they are. My son, Tres, even accepted Christ at the WPRA Finals in Waco surrounded by our Rodeo For A Reason group. Makailey and Tres have no fear in talking or singing about their faith. Tres loves to sing his lungs out (even rolls down the car windows at a stop light to blare Christian music) for the Lord. The tiniest of seeds was planted the day we bought a horse. Without our connection with Rodeo For A Reason, I don’t know where each of us would be in our Faith Journey.

Makailey and Tres have become part of an amazing rodeo family through the different places we ride. Before each rodeo or barrel race, you can find my kids behind the chutes or in the warm up arena talking to a lot of different people. Most of these conversations include a prayer for the person, or at least a conversation about Jesus. We are blessed to able to spread the word of Jesus Christ through rodeo. Tres shares his Faith at school as well as with “The Big Boys” behind the chutes, before he rides bareback or saddle bronc ponies. Makailey openly talks about her Faith at school, openly prays before volleyball games, as well as at her barrel races.

The Rodeo For A Reason group is not just there at clinics, barrel races, rodeos. They are there for you anytime. We have been able to call any of the members at a moment’s notice and they will pray with us, point out helpful scripture, as well as help guide us. The Rodeo For A Reason group has become part of our family. I thank God every day that we meet Kendra, who was able to teach us about Rodeo For A Reason. We look forward to the journey that is ahead.
